ATTENTION OWNERS OF 2001 – 2008 Volkswagens:
Voluntary Emissions Service Action – Ignition Coils

What is the problem?
Vehicles affected by this action may have ignition coils that could malfunction under certain conditions. If this happens, the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will illuminate to let you know that the vehicle may experience some deterioration in performance. Please refer to your vehicle owner’s manual for additional information when the MIL comes on, and if necessary, you should take your vehicle to the nearest authorized Volkswagen dealer for diagnosis and repair as soon as possible. In some cases, a malfunctioning ignition coil may cause a vehicle to exceed Federal and/or California/Provincial emissions standards.

What is the repair?
Boston Volkswagen will inspect and, as necessary, replace the ignition coils in affected vehicles. This work will be performed at no cost to you.

Reimbursement for Prior Coil Replacement
If you paid for ignition coil replacement prior to this program, please apply for reimbursement via First-Class mail. Simply click on the link below to view and print the required form. It provides you with the terms for reimbursement and simple instructions on how to apply. We will be pleased to receive your reimbursement request.

Customers who receive reimbursement will still be eligible for the inspection and, if necessary, installation of new ignition coils in their vehicles once parts become available.

[Safety] Stories from the Drivers.

Here in the Internet Department we‘re always looking for those interesting stories that people share with us. When it comes to Volkswagens and the experiences that our customers have had, I always find it interesting how so many people are such dedicated and loyal customers and the path that brought them to be this dedicated. The most interesting thing is that it's for multiple reasons. Some it's the drive, some the dependability, some the customer service. In this case, it is the unsurpassed safety of our favorite German vehicles.

I recently met one of our newest return customers, Martina and Hugh of Newton. They shared the following images and story about an accident Martina was involved in back in November of 2003. She told me how the person behind her “rear-ended” her going 30mph in her 2000 Volkswagen GTI and literally pushed her underneath a truck that was waiting for the traffic light in front of her.

It is one of those stories that when her husband, Hugh explained the phone call he received from Martina shortly after it happened, I personally thought about how lucky we really are to have such safety in a vehicle. That may sound like a promotion for our vehicles, but it makes me feel better knowing that my wife is driving behind the wheel of this same safety.

When I asked Martina if she had any words to share, her response was “don’t talk on the phone while you’re driving”

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) Explained

I came across this helpful youtube video below and thought I would share. Quite a nice demonstration to have a look at if you would like to see ESP in action.

If you are not sure just what difference ESP can make when the going gets a little tricky, check out the following video provided by Volkswagen.



Volkswagen’s ESP system uses a number of electronic vehicle controls to assist the driver in maintaining control of the car in difficult conditions. Using a variety of sensors that measure variables such as yaw rate and steering angle, an ESP system has the ability to predict where a driver is intending to steer a vehicle and brake wheels individually or collectively in order to correct the cars attitude in the event of traction loss or excessive over or understeer.

In VW’s case, the ESP system works in conjunction with the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Anti-slip Regulation (ASR) system as well as components of the Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) system.

At the time of writing, providing ESP on all 2009 models is a VW North American market initiative only but could be the start of similar moves by other manufacturers.

With recent calls for ESP to be made a mandatory fitment on new vehicles in Australia it shouldn’t be long before we see Volkswagen and other manufacturers take ESP off the options list and make it standard fitment across their model ranges.

2009 Volkswagen Touareg TDI - COMING SOON!

2009 Volkswagen Touareg TDI is coming!

Volkswagen is continuing its diesel story in the United States with the 2009 Volkswagen Touareg TDI. VW sold its first diesel vehicle in the U.S. way back in 1997 and introduced the turbo-diesel engine to the States in 1992. The latest chapter in this story is the 2009 Touareg with the 3.0-liter V-6, which will be available in the spring of 2009.

You may remember Volkswagen's monster V-10 turbo-diesel Touareg, which churned out an incredible 310 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque with little regard for fuel economy. Thankfully, this time VW is bringing us a Touareg TDI that's all about fuel economy, a much better fit in the current economic and political landscapes. This V-6 should return 17/25 mpg. For comparison, the gasoline V-6 engine gets 14/20 mpg and the V-8 is rated at a mere 13/18 mpg. With 221 hp and 407 lb-ft of torque, the Touareg TDI V-6 doesn't sacrifice performance; a 0-60 mph sprint should take about 8.5 seconds.

Perhaps more amazing than the increase in fuel economy is the reduction in emissions Volkswagen has achieved through the years. Emissions have been reduced by 90 percent when compared to the original VW diesels sold here and the Touareg meets the Tier 2, Bin 5 requirements, so it can be sold in all 50 states. The complex exhaust system, which uses a selective catalytic converter and AdBlue, removes 90 percent of the NOx emissions and 95 percent of particulates in the exhaust. Diesel Loses Premium to Gas as Jetta Autos Appreciate

Feb. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Diesel, which has traded consistently above gasoline in the U.S. since July 2007, will sell at a discount by April as a global recession saps demand for the world’s most-consumed transport fuel and inventories rise.

“By April, gasoline is going to cost more,” said Andrew Reed, an Energy Security Analysis Inc. oil expert in Boston. “Once we get past heating oil season, it’s all up to diesel demand” to set distillate prices, he said. “The real weakness is going to be exposed.”

The New York Harbor market price for diesel dropped 13 percent in 2009 to within 14 cents per gallon of gasoline, which rose 11 percent, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Reed sees diesel costing as much as 20 cents less from April until demand for heating oil, its distillate twin, increases in the fall.

As reduced consumer spending trimmed the volume of goods transported, the American Trucking Associations’ truck tonnage index fell 14 percent in December from a year before, the biggest drop since 1996. U.S. consumption of diesel and heating oil declined seven times faster than gasoline in January, the Energy Department says. Stockpiles rose to 106.6 million barrels last month, the most since at least 1993.

The recession will cut world oil demand this year by a million barrels a day to 84.7 million, the biggest drop since 1982, according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency. Oil in New York dropped 73 percent from a record $147.27 a barrel in July to $40.10 at 9:41 a.m. today. Crude accounts for 39 percent of diesel’s retail price, the Energy Department says.
